Lawmakers Paint for Sandy Hook - The Hill's Gossip BlogIn The Know - The Hill's Gossip Blog - by Judy Kurtz - 4/25/13

"Lawmakers and their family members are painting works of art to raise money to benefit children at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

And we’ve got to say, while the congressional artists — including former Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), Elizabeth Roskam, the wife of Rep. Peter Roskam (R-Ill.), and the husband of Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Chuck Blackburn — might not be the next Monet or Renoir, their paintings are très magnifique."

April 24, 2013 - "The Sandy Hook Arts Center for Kids, the SHACK, is a nonprofit organization founded by Wendy Leahy Mitchell, Newtown High School Class of ‘87 and her fellow alumni who wanted to do something to bring healing through the arts to the town after the tragic events of December 14, 2012. The mission of the SHACK is to provide a safe haven for the children of the Sandy Hook and Newtown community to come to heal through the arts and explore various art forms while expressing themselves artistically in a nurturing environment. Here they can experience the benefits of art therapy, music therapy, pet therapy and other creative mediums such as music, art, theatre, dance and more. Their educational and therapeutic programs are taught by board certified and licensed professional therapists.

Each piece of artwork tells a story—a story of using creative mediums to empower, to communicate, to heal and to visualize. For children, engaging in leisure, play, art, or music can help in understanding, expressing, and coping with what is happening. With the encouragement and guidance of Wendy and her team, the children of the SHACK have produced astounding artwork that visually expresses their hopes and dreams. We applaud their imaginative efforts and generous spirit."  READ MORE...

The S.H.A.C.K. will keep the memory of the 20 children who passed away on 12/14/12 alive. Their passion and love for drawing, music, dance and acting will live on in through the arts as an everlasting legacy. The S.H.A.C.K. will bring light, love and hope to the community in a place where people can come and heal.
